Key Statutes

What the Law Says

Indiana Code § 22-11-14

The Core Fireworks Law

Indiana law permits the sale and use of 1.4G consumer fireworks statewide. Indiana is one of the most permissive states in the country — residents may purchase and use a wide range of consumer fireworks without a permit.

Age Requirement

Must Be 18 to Purchase

You must be at least 18 years old to purchase consumer fireworks in Indiana. Retailers are required to verify age. Selling fireworks to minors is a violation of state law.

Local Ordinances

Cities & Counties May Restrict

While Indiana state law permits consumer fireworks, individual cities and counties may enact stricter local ordinances — including time restrictions, discharge bans in certain zones, or permit requirements. Always check your local municipality.

Fire Bans

Drought & Burn Conditions

During periods of drought or elevated fire danger, local authorities may issue temporary burn bans that prohibit the discharge of fireworks. Check with your local fire department or county emergency management before shooting.

Private Property

Use on Your Own Land

Fireworks must be used on private property with the permission of the property owner. Discharging fireworks on public property, parks, or roadways is generally prohibited without a permit.

Liability

You Are Responsible

The person who ignites fireworks is legally responsible for any damage, injury, or fire that results. This includes property damage to neighbors. Homeowner's insurance may not cover fireworks-related incidents — check your policy.
